Assistant Professor of Economics
School of Economics
The university and the School of Economics is a vibrant and dynamic place for research and this was clear already at my first campus visit. The university is well-connected and taps into international research networks. In addition, Singapore in itself and as a hub of the region makes SMU a great option for international faculty and staff.
The best part of my job is to get to learn from my colleagues and also from my students. SMU has a very friendly atmosphere and I feel happy every day when I come to work. That is a great foundation for a job that demands creative and innovative work!
It is true that Singapore is safe and well-organised. One of the fascinating things about Singapore is that, for being such a densely populated large city on a small surface, it is remarkably stress-free. And it's not an exaggeration to say that Singapore has the best street food in the world in its hawker centres. Weekend travel opportunities are plenty -- no matter if you prefer beaches, rain forest or buzzling cities.
SMU is unique in that in encourages its students to expand beyond their studies through internships and community service but also through sports, music and dance. Students become more rounded as individuals and more capable to add to the learning process in the classroom with insightful views.
At SMU I have found a great group of colleagues and friends who have challenged me to progress in my research. I get to teach a diverse group of students with strong character, and get to be reminded of how similar we all are, no matter where we come from.
Go ahead and apply -- you will not regret it!
